Das Institute for Materialdesign and Advanced Material Studies IMD an der Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach arbeitet an der experimentellen und interdisziplinären Verschneidung von Gestaltung und Materialisierung. Schwerpunkt der Arbeiten ist die Rolle des Materials im Gestaltungsprozess.
Aus materialgerechtem Gestalten wird ein „Gestalten mit gestalteten Materialien“. 

The Institute for Materialdesign and Advanced Material Studies IMD at the university of art and design in Offenbach works in the experimental and interdisciplinary intersection of design and materialization. The focus of the work is the role of the material in the design process. Material-appropriate design becomes „design with designed materials“ 

Das am IMD entwickelte „Gestalten mit gestalteten Materialien“ agiert als methodischer Ansatz in Forschung und Lehre. Das IMD verbindet die aus den Gestaltungsdisziplinen wie Architektur und Design bekannten Bereiche des Entwerfens mit denen der Analyse, Forschung und Entwicklung von Materialien, die man aus dem Ingenieurwesen und der Werkstoffentwicklung kennt. Auf der Grundlage einer experimentellen und interdisziplinären Vorgehensweise werden am Institut for Materialdesign and Advanced Material Studiesneue materialbasierte und –induzierte Gestaltungskonzeptionen entwickelt und erforscht. Seit 2023 ist das Institut in der historischen Prozellanmanufaktur in Frankfurt Höchst verortet.

Wir laden herzlich zur Eröffnung der Insect Embassy  am 10. Juli 2023 um 18:00 Uhr an der Platane am Domplatz, Markt 1, 60311 Frankfurt am Main ein.
Die Insect Embassy ist eine Kooperation von ISOE – Institut für sozial-ökologische Forschung und IMD – Institut für Materialdesign der HfG Offenbach. Sie entstand im Rahmen des Forschungsprojekts „SLInBio – Städtische Lebensstile und die Inwertsetzung von Biodiversität“, das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) als Teil der BMBF-Forschungsinitiative zum Erhalt der Artenvielfalt (FEdA) gefördert wird. Insekten sind für unsere Gesellschaft und für unser Überleben von zentraler Bedeutung, das wird noch allzu oft übersehen. Mit der „Insect Embassy“, einer künstlerischen Installation, wird die Bedeutung von Insekten stärker ins Bewusstsein gerückt. Die diplomatische Vertretung für Insekten wird im Sommer 2023 vier Wochen lang, vom 10.07. bis 06.08.2023 für die Frankfurter Stadtbevölkerung und Besucher*innen der Mainmetropole am Domplatz installiert. Eine Vernissage am 10. Juli bildet den Auftakt.

We are delighted to extend our warmest invitation to the exhibition opening of the Insect Embassy. This event will take place
on 10th July 2023 at 6pm at Platane am Domplatz, Markt 1, 60311 Frankfurt am Main.

The Insect Embassy is a collaboration between the ISOE – Institute for Social-Ecological Research and the IMD – Institute for Material Design at HfG Offenbach. It was created as part of the research project „SLInBio – Urban Lifestyles and the Valorization of Biodiversity,“ funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the BMBF Research Initiative for Biodiversity Conservation (FEdA). From 10th July to 6th August 2023, we will bring an artistic installation to the public which aims to shed light on the importance of insects, which are often overlooked in our society. It will serve as a diplomatic representation for insects, captivating the residents of Frankfurt and visitors to the Main metropolis. The opening event on July 10th will mark the commencement of this exhibition.

„HEALING MATERIALITIES from a biodesign perspective“
Open Lecture by Barbara Pollini
as part of the „Materials and Sustainability“ course by Dr. Ziyu Zhou.

Barbara Pollini, a PhD candidate in design at the Polytechnic University of Milan, will share her ongoing research on material scenarios based on regenerative processes, with a specific focus on living and life-enabling materials. Drawing upon her expertise in sustainable design and materials, as well as her background in Ecodesign, Eco-innovation and Computational Design, Barbara has been actively engaged in the field since 2010 as a designer, educator, and researcher. Her doctoral research explores the intersection of sustainability, material design, and the emerging field of biodesign. The aim of her study is to define the capabilities of biodesigned materials in restorative and regenerative processes, with a particular emphasis on living and life-enabling materials. By pushing the boundaries of materiality, her research seeks to create novel material compositions that actively support and enhance life.
